Washing a boat with hard water requires plenty of physical effort, great quantities of cleaning products and tons of time.  After all that work, it also leaves water spots behind.

Hard water that dries on a finish can be difficult to remove as the minerals in the spots remain active and etch a surface.  To help combat the effects of hard water, owners should remove residual hard water from paint, glass and other high-gloss or high-profile finishes with a final rinse from a water filtration system.

This spot-free water is the result of a treatment process which removes, or greatly reduces, the dissolved solids from the incoming water supply.  There are two processes that can provide this, deionization and reverse osmosis.

Deionization (DI) is a physical process utilizing special ion exchange resins that bind to and filter out the mineral salts from water.  The resulting water is of high purity that is spot-free.  DI water is ideal for washing smaller boats and detailers, or any time there’s not a need for drying.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) requires water to pass through filtration cartridges and then through a membrane that retains minerals and contaminants.  RO systems vary in their efficiency with some units using up to 4 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of pure water.  Excess water which usually flows into the drain can be circulated through the system reducing overall water consumption.

As the system purifies the water, it is collected in a holding tank or transferred into smaller holding tanks.  A delivery pump is usually required to transfer the water to another tank or to generate the necessary pressure for washing or spraying from the main holding tank.  Great for higher volume users, mobile detailers will prove an RO system to be more cost-effective in the long run.

CleaRinse offers a complete line of portable, inline and stationary water softening, purifying and filtration systems for boaters.  By removing harmful, finish-damaging minerals that cause water spots, the company’s products reduce overall maintenance time, while helping to preserve the appearance of various surfaces and finishes.

For those seeking a spot-free rinse, CleaRinse offers both portable De-ionized (DI) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems designed to eliminate the need for drying while leaving finishes spotless.  The Spot Free DI units are cartridge-based systems that utilize semiconductor-grade, mixed-bed exchange resin for ultra-pure water.
