dsc_3973TWIN DISC REDEFINES MARINE POWER STEERING

Redefining power steering, Twin Disc offers its next-generation E-STEER™. This state-of-the-art control solution connects the helm to hydraulic-powered rudder(s) electronically and delivers a whole new driving experience.

E-STEER provides adaptive resistance through Speed Sensing technology. As the boat’s speed increases, the helm becomes firmer and more agile, similar to the effect in a top-end automobile. When it’s time to throttle back, the wheel is light and highly responsive.

Driving can be tiring when the wheel reacts to every rudder movement, especially in a choppy sea. With E-STEER, the helm is smooth and vibration-free. Holding a steady course is effortless.

The new E-STEER system also adds Dynamic Rudder Control, which constantly—and proportionally—adjusts the range of movement based on the vessel’s speed. This prevents the extreme, unsafe rudder angles and improves steering.

Housed within the helm console, the self-contained E-STEER unit is straightforward to install on new builds or refits. Gone are the days of checking reservoirs, ram seals, fittings and countless yards of hydraulic line—and leaks, that invariably occur in the most inaccessible spots. Instead, wires connect the wheel and DC-powered hydraulic cylinders, providing instant, precise steering control.

For almost 100 years, Twin Disc has made boating safer and more enjoyable. The company manufactures a wide range of innovative transmissions, joystick and electronic controls, and other performance equipment.

USCG-APPROVED SLIMLINE A-60 FIRE DAMPER IS NOW AVAILABLE

The bar on safety aboard is once again raised by Delta “T” Systems.

Delta “T” Systems, global leader in marine ventilation, has unveiled its new Slimline Fire Damper, the narrowest in the market at only 4.25″ deep. It’s USCG approved for use in penetrating Class A-0, A-15, A-30 and A-60 bulkheads and decks, and Wheelmark certified under the EU Marine Equipment Directive (MED).

Built in the USA of 100% 316 stainless steel, the patent pending Slimline Fire Damper is an innovative, yet robust design. All the components are thicker and stronger than the competition, making the device uniquely durable. Its overlapping blades rotate in parallel for strength and have a patented locking mechanism for keeping the damper closed during a fire event. Its thin profile provides boatbuilders the ability to conserve machinery room space and adapt the unit to existing areas.

delta-t

Its thermal tripping device is mounted on a separate bracket. When the machinery space reaches 165° F, the sensor trips the actuator, closing the damper. It’s manually resettable so it won’t need to be replaced in the event of unintended exposure to excess heat. It also comes with a test switch to check functionality when completing inspections.

The failsafe actuator produces 180 in-lb of closing torque, powered by 24-240V AC or 24-125V DC. The unit has dry contact outputs for open/closed readouts. It fits an NEMA2 IP54 ZP type 2 enclosure and is CE approved.

“To support the demand that this new damper is generating, we’ve introduced new manufacturing capabilities and equipment,” said Lynn Oien, Delta “T” Systems president. The company recently hired production manager Tony Matherly, who has spearheaded the manufacturing initiative.

Order turnaround times are extremely quick due to the 28 standard sizes from 9″ x 9″ to 46.75″ x 46.75″. Unlimited custom individual sizes are available up to 46.75″ x 46.75″. They come fully assembled and ready to install.

DSC04261LEADING CAUSES OF BOAT FIRES NEGATED WITH SMARTPLUG

When it comes to safety onboard, this simple quick fix can help prevent a serious problem from occurring.

Electrical issues, especially overheating and loose connections, are the leading cause of recreational boat fires. Retrofitting to SmartPlug Systems’ 30 Amp Inlet and Connector Kit protects boat owners against these worries. It’s the ground-breaking, safe alternative to old-fashioned, twist-type connections.

Simple to use, the SmartPlug System has dual locking clips and a sleeved inlet design for a rock-solid connection. The unique shape of the inlet makes it easy to orient when connecting, even in the dark. It pushes straight in; no pin alignment, twisting or lock ring is required.

smartplug

Combined, the connector and inlet provide 20 times the pin and clip electrical contact than twist-style models, greatly reducing the chance of overheating. Three weatherproofing seals prevent water intrusion and resultant corrosion. All SmartPlug products are engineered to meet or exceed code compliance standards for the US, Canadian and European markets.

The 30A/125V kit contains an inlet and connector, using marine-grade 316 stainless steel components. Boat owners retrofit the female connector to their existing shore power cords. Installation is fast and easy, with minimal tools and skill needed. The boat side inlet uses the same standard mounting holes as the industry standard twist-type inlets.  No new holes or drilling is required.

LINEGRABBER IS A SIMPLE WAY TO CREATE ATTACHMENT POINT

A simple device makes line handling safe and easy.

Making an attachment point on a line without making a knot is simple. Boaters just need the LineGrabber from Davis Instruments. With a spliced and sewn loop at each end, it works by cinching tight around a line. The more tension that is applied to the LineGrabber, the more it constricts.

Compatible with any line up to 1″ in diameter, this handy tool is made of 1/4″ ultra-high modulus fiber and holds up to 2,000 lbs. This material is tough enough to grab a chain, cleat, pulpit or handrail, and strong enough to help unload a fouled sheet.

dav22582-x3hLineGrabber can be used to take tension off a jammed line, secure a rescue line, add a secure attachment point to a rail or stanchion, lead a static line in any direction, or grab chains and railings. Perfect for rafts, boats and kayaks, it can help secure an anchor or create a temporary mooring. In addition, LineGrabber can attach to harnesses, pulleys or gently to car tops where a loop is ideal to clip to.

Owners simply use a basic Prusik hitch to tie or adjust LineGrabber in seconds. For any size line from 1/2″ to 1″ in diameter, users loop the LineGrabber twice around and through itself each time. Cinching it tight then creates a strong, secure attachment point. For lines smaller than 1/2″ in diameter, the LineGrabber can be looped around three times.

HOW TO SELECT AND MAINTAIN A PORTABLE MARINE TOILET

If you need a portable marine toilet aboard, Thetford just may have what you are looking for.

Portable toilets are an ideal choice for small weekend, trailer and sport boats. They provide the convenience of a fixed head, but without the weight, complexity and space requirements of a plumbed system. Thetford, the inventor of the Porta Potti®, offers selection and maintenance tips.

There’s a broad array of sizes, features and options when shopping for a portable toilet. Heights range from around 12″ to over 17″, and seat dimensions from medium to large. The dimensions of the unit selected is often based on available space and the level of comfort desired. The average weight is only around 10 lbs., making it an ideal choice for racing sailors.

tht22437h

Flushing is accomplished manually by a bellows or piston-actuated pump, or electrically. This ultra-convenient feature on the Porta Potti Curve is self-contained and runs on disposable or rechargeable AA batteries. Other options to choose from are waste and fresh water holding capacities, and level indicators for one or both tanks.

All Porta Pottis can be used with a hold-down plate for semi-permanent installation and many come standard with this feature. Several models have plumbing adapters for permanent pump out convenience and to comply with US and Canadian regulations.

Maintaining a Porta Potti is simple. When the tank is nearing capacity, the upper portion is simply lifted off and the leak-proof waste side removed for emptying in a land-based toilet or designated area. Because of their modern designs, discharge is splash-free.

Quality tank deodorants, such as Thetford’s Eco-Smart or Aqua Kem, reduce odors and quickly liquefy waste; samples are included with every Porta Potti. Marine toilet paper, such as 2-ply Aqua Soft Tissue, breaks down fast and makes emptying the holding tank simple and clog-free.

Thetford Marine offers eight models of its famous Porta Potti, including the ultra-compact 260 series and the electric Curve. These high quality toilets are durable, long lasting and cost-effective. Prices start around $90.

For over 50 years, boaters have relied on industry innovator Thetford Marine for its quality and dependable products. Its wide range of marine sanitation equipment is installed on boats worldwide.

SUNNY ATTITUDE

Solar Power Adds More Benefits To ShoreStation Boat Lift

ShoreStation FlexPower Hydraulic Lifts are known for their speed and reliability. DC power is the brawn behind both of these benefits. The charge of the system’s marine deep-cycle batteries can be maintained by a 20W solar panel, transforming a boat lift into an environmentally friendly and electrically safe, hydraulic system that is economical to install and simple to operate.

More than just a battery charger, the solar panel completely removes the need for an AC power circuit on the dock, creating a safer environment. In addition, this eliminates the high, up-front costs of installing AC power with the required GFCI equipment and the inconvenience of running power all the way to a slip. Owners can also say goodbye to annual electrical safety inspections and maintenance.

mid22275hEric Sager, with the help of Ocean One Docks and Boat Lifts, recently installed a ShoreStation lift with solar panel at the end of a canal near his home for his 22′ Pro-Line. “A more traditional, AC powered lift would have cost $600 a year just for the needed electric meter,” said Sager. “The solar charger makes the ShoreStation Lift totally independent from AC power. The cost-savings are excellent. This lift is the best money I ever spent. Ocean One was great about installing everything, too, even for such a unique application.”

With a self-contained solar panel, users can recharge the lift battery with a clean, free and renewable power supply. Simple to use and hassle-free, the solar panel automatically charges the battery with no daily maintenance. It also protects the battery from draining and over-charging. ShoreStation’s 20W solar panel even charges faster than traditional 10 watt models, ensuring a quick recovery time so it’s always ready for use.

TORQEEDO POWER NOW OFFERED ON
SCHOCK HARBOR 20 DAYSAILER

Offered for the first time, a Torqeedo electric outboard is now available as an optional electric propulsion upgrade for W. D. Schock Corp.’s Harbor 20 daysailer.  The Torqeedo Travel 1003 and Shock Harbor 20 pairing is ideal for anyone who sails in areas with large tidal changes, strong currents or high average wind speeds with choppy water conditions.

“We’ve manufactured over 600 electric-powered sailboats, so it’s safe to say Schock stands as the most experienced boatbuilder in this area.  After extensive testing, we found Torqeedo’s Travel 1003 electric outboard to be lightweight, high-quality and high-power,” said Alexander Vucelic, W.D. Shock Corp. president.  “The 1003 is a perfect fit with the Harbor 20.”

The Torqeedo Travel 1003 provides the equivalent horsepower of a 3-hp outboard.  At full speed, the motor can push the Harbor 20 at 5 knots for about 35 minutes.  If the user powers down to 50% throttle, then the battery and motor would have over 2 hours of run time at 3 knots.

This electric outboard can move vessels up to 3,000 lbs.  Fully fresh and saltwater-proof, it can be rigged for remote throttle, enabling easy rudder steering.  It also features a removable tiller arm.  A tiller display shows precise information on battery charge status, remaining range at current speed, speed over ground and power consumption.

Blending the classic beauty of a traditional daysailer with state-of-the-art marine technology, Schock’s Harbor 20 is a competitive, cost-effective and easy-to-use boat that will always be in style.  A graceful shearline counter paired with a thoroughly modern underbody and rig makes the Harbor 20 fast and easy to handle.  It can be rigged in minutes and sailed single-handedly or with a group.

W. D. Schock Corp. was founded in 1946 in Newport Beach, California.  The company has built more than 13,000 boats in its sixty-five year history, ranging in size from the ever popular 8′ Naples Sabot to the stunning Schock 55.  The company is responsible for many innovations in the industry.  In 1965, Schock introduced a Penguin that was the first production vacuum-bagged fiberglass and Unicore sandwich sailboat.  Schock has built racers and cruisers, monohulls and catamarans; and in 2001 W.D. Schock collaborated with Dyna Yachts to introduce the canting ballast twin foil (CBTF) Schock 40.

Boats currently in production are the Sabot, Lehman 12, Lido 14, Santana 20, Santana 22, Wavelength 24, Schock 35, Schock 40 and the popular line of Harbor daysailors.  The Harbor line includes the Harbor 14, Harbor 20, Harbor 25 and new Harbor 30.

Combining lithium batteries with leading-edge motor technology and propeller design, Torqeedo’s high-tech outboards have won numerous awards.  Environmentally-sound, they offer unrivalled strength and efficiency for superior range.  Committed to superior technology, Torqeedo offers 13 outboards from 1 hp to 15 hp with innovative accessories, such as solar-charging technology and high-performance lithium batteries.

WASTE TREATMENT SYSTEM HELPS KEEP WATERS CLEANER

Federal laws have prohibited boaters from dumping untreated septic waste into coastal bodies of water for decades, and the proper way to dispose of wastewater can be confusing.  Owners of boats up to 65′ can rely on the ElectroScan from Raritan, for use in coastal waters which have not been designated “no discharge” by the US EPA.  This US Coast Guard-certified Type 1 marine sanitation device (MSD) transforms discharge wastewater so that it is generally cleaner than the waters in which the boat is traveling.

The waste treatment process occurs in three phases and automatically starts with each flush.  First, saltwater and untreated waste enters the unit and immediately goes into the maceration chamber; solids are reduced to minute particles by a specially designed cutting blade.  Then, electric current is applied to electrodes, which convert the salt water to a powerful bactericide and oxidizing agent, hypochlorus acid.  Bacteria and viruses are forced into contact with the treatment agent.

The next time the treatment unit is activated the treated waste from the maceration chamber crosses over into the mixing chamber.  Waste is treated a second time and further broken down by oxidation, eliminating odors, reducing nutrients and resulting in sanitized waste and salt water.

Finally, treated waste is discharged with <0-5 FC Bacteria/100 mL.  Bacteria and viruses are destroyed, while there are no visible floating solids or chemicals added to the process or released.  Salt water is returned to receiving waters.

The smallest, most popular and environmentally friendly treatment system available, ElectroScan records each treatment cycle and stores key information in non-volatile memory that can be summarized on the LCD display or downloaded to a PC.  Utilizing only 1.2 amp hours per cycle, ElectroScan generates its own natural disinfectant from salt water.

Single button operation ensures treatment after each flush.  Solid-state components offer ease of use and servicing.  A salt-feed system and pump installation option regulates salinity.  ElectroScan is available in 12, 24 or 32V DC.  A sensor for manual toilet auto start is also available.
