YANMAR POWERS NOR-TECHS FOR PERFORMANCE AND
FUEL SAVINGS

The latest 42′ models from performance builder Nor-Tech Boats serve very different types of owners.  European styling and abundant seating on the 420 MC take luxury tenders to a new level.  Nor-Tech’s fishing enthusiast customers likewise won’t be disappointed in the roomy and sporty new 420 Center Console.  But both crowds reap the benefit of outstanding performance and superior fuel efficiency from the boats’ twin Yanmar 8LV 370 hp engines supplied by Mastry Engine Center.

Both models are born from a new hand-laid fiberglass and Kevlar hull design that’s fast and fuel efficient, and provides a great ride.  “A fast hull wasn’t the top goal originally, but we ended up with one of the fastest on the market today for its size.  It’s dry and stable, running circles around many other boats,” said Terry Sobo, Nor-Tech’s director of sales and marketing.

“Yanmar’s 8LV diesel is complementary to this new hull.  It’s lightweight and cranks right up like a gas engine.  It’s extremely quiet yet creates a lot of torque,” he said.  “And the fuel consumption is amazing.”

In recent tests the 420 MC topped out at 63 mph and the 420 CC at 59 mph.  At 44 mph, both boats averaged better than 2 mpg.  The 420 MC consumed 29 gph at 52 mph, while the 420 CC burned 27 gph at 50 mph – half the fuel consumption of the typical triple 300 hp outboard setup.

“The ability to maintain the same cruise speed as the outboard package, yet cut the fuel cost in half is tremendous,” said Sobo.  “With the competitive price of the Yanmar 8LV, you’ll quickly see the fuel savings add up.”  Twin 315 hp Yanmar 6LPs are also an option on the 42′ models.

A Yanmar OEM for nearly 20 years, Nor-Tech enjoys a tight relationship with distributor Mastry Engine Center.  “We’re almost like brothers.  They work closely with us to make the best packages for our customers, they’re always right there with support and service,” said Sobo.

Sobo describes the 420 MC as a luxury cruiser with European styling.  Its 10′ beam and abundant seating accommodates 10-12 guests.  Forward of the helm are twin aft-facing lounge areas protected by a wrap-around windshield.  Farther aft are twin sunlounges and a large swim platform.

With a 30″ draft and 10′ beam, the Nor-Tech 420 CC offers a flexible floor plan.  The forward sunlounge with berth below and wrap-around forward seating is a great cruising combination.  A fishing layout with or without forward seating adds fish boxes and a bait prep/tackle station.

The EPA Tier 3-compliant Yanmar 8LV weighs about 200 lbs. lighter than a big block gas engine.  Smooth, powerful acceleration is achieved by Yanmar’s twin turbochargers and a hydraulic clutch.  The engine idles at 550 rpm and tops out at 3,800 rpm.

The 8LV is the first to use Yanmar’s proprietary CAN-bus vessel control system (VCS).  Operation is simplified with integrated full-color digital displays with NMEA2000 or J1939 gauge output, cabling and wiring.
